To facebook or not to facebook??

I know, I am so behind the times. I know everyone is on facebook, everyone but me. But everyone had a blog waayy before I did too. Maybe I don't understand it all but here's my problem with facebook...I don't want everyone to know where I am and what I'm doing. Wait, sounds like my blog!?!?

Let me clarify, I come from where we like to call the 'Middle of BFF', small podunk town with ONE, count 'em, ONE traffic light. I moved away AS FAST AS I COULD, (Read: as soon as I graduated from school) and never looked back. I don't go back to visit, I don't talk to anybody I went to school with or was friends with. I've been there twice in 12 years. And I'm ok with that.

I didn't go home during the summers or breaks from college. I was one of about 6 people from my class that went to college, and there is nothing wrong with those who did not go to college, they all stayed and went to work in the fields and factories, and that's fine, that just wasn't for me. So I HIGHTAILED IT OUT OF THERE!

So why get on facebook just to find all those people again? I can't imagine that I have one.single.thing. in common with these people. Of course, maybe the Internet isn't even available in my old town. You can laugh, but I'm not joking. I didn't have cable till I went to college.

And then there are the inlaws. I don't really care for them, they don't really care for me, it's mutual. Hubby and I don't tell them much about our lives. Not. Much. At. All. I don't want them to be able to get on facebook and find out information about us that we don't want them to know.

There are a few people from college I wouldn't mind catching up with, but it's been so long since we've seen each other, at this point why bother??

So, do you facebook?

*raising right hand* I facebook and I love it. Amen.

If facebook was around 10 years ago, I would have run away and never looked back for the EXACT reasons you listed.

But the great thing about facebook is that you can limit what you want people to know--even the personal stuff. Don't want to list your town? Don't want to list your occupation/company? Don't want to list anything personal? Don't!

I have been able to connect with lots of people who I haven't seen in a long, long time. That has been fun! But I won't lie. There are people who I wouldn't friend on facebook even if you gave me $10 million dollars. You control it.

There are definate pros and cons. But I love it! :)

I'm in the same situation you're in. I didn't keep up with anyone from high school, but there are a few people from college that I would like to catch up with. But is it worth the time? I don't know. My husband does it and has been bugging me about getting on for a year now, but I still can't decide!

I just started facebooking to connect with a childhood friend from 20 years ago. I haven't found it to be as interesting as I've heard it to be.

There are some folks I call "crack book addicts" because they post their status ALL THE TIME. That's not for me.

Funny thing - the folks from high school that were never that popular have the most friends!

I say you're not really missing out on much. But out of curiosity it might be fun to try it!

I L O V E facebook. Amen. And if it makes you feel any better, I am not an overly social person. I just like being able to communicate with others on my own terms. Don't want to be friends with someone? Just click "IGNORE" on the friend request! Everything is blocked to people who aren't your friend anyway so they won't be able to keep tabs on ya! Facebook has almost replaced email for me. Most everyone I email back and forth with are on facebook and we just message eachother. And it is soooo much easier to share photos with people in the albums you can make there!

If you don't like it, you can always close your facebook page!

I started doing facebook about 4 years ago, when you had to be a student at college to sign up.

I find it to be a lot less fun now that some of my friends' moms, aunts, etc. are on it.

I just use it to spy on people from high school to see who is bald/fat/both!
Other than that, the thrill is gone.

I Facebook. I think it's fun to reconnect with all the people I haven't seen in YEARS, but I had a lot of friends in HS and college with whom I've lost touch, so I really appreciate that aspect. Beyond that, I don't really care if so-and-so from HS knows where I live and that I have 3 kids and what their names are. I don't find anything weird about that at all, so it's fun for me. It's not for everyone, though!

I facebook, too, and will update every few days. Hubby's family is on it and it's great to see what they are doing since we only see each other once a year (or 2). I don't do the whole poking and sending hearts and drinks to people, though:)
